Graham in partnership with his wife Iris were the past owners of the grazing and farming property Nectarbrook. They have retained some land and the experimental Sandalwood and Quandong plantation They are in partnership running Nectarbrook Discovery Plantation. This was established to take advantage of their management skills, specialist horticultural knowledge and production from the experimental plantation. All Quandong fruit from the plantation is processed into a quality Quandong jam and wholesaled to retail outlets. This jam bears their registered trademark Aridland Australia. Quandong and Sandalwood seed is sold all over Australia. A small production nursery has been, each year, selling several thousand Quandong and Sandalwood seedlings propagated to order to everywhere except Western Australia. The production nursery is closing after the 2007 season. A WA agent propagates The "Nectarbrook" cultivar Quandong for WA. The Quandong seedlings ("Nectarbrook cultivar) are the end result of a successful breeding programme to develop a more reliable seedling Quandong. Selected seed from both Quandong and Sandalwood will be available for sale, and on request, hormone treated for best germination. The many years of owning and managing property in dryland Australia puts them in a position to offer general agricultural consultancy. The years of Santalum experimentation puts them in the unique position of being two of the few people in the world able to advise on all aspects of managed plantation growing of Sandalwood and Quandong. Graham has a certificate in Advanced Urban Horticulture / Plant propagation. He has spent ten years in local government, two years as his councils chairman. Spent some years as a voluntary consultant assisting the DC of Mt Remarkable in it's preparation of The Flinders Ranges Development Plan, as applicable to that council area. He has filled most positions in his local Rotary club, has been President of the Australian Quandong Industry Association and has compiled and published their newsletter. He has all the engineering, mechanical, office, planning and work skills to have run an arid land farming and grazing property. Sufficient computer skill to design, publish and manage this web site. Iris trained as a nurse before marriage and while the children were going to school worked as a school assistant in Port Augusta. She has managed the Santalum propagation and sales. Iris makes the Quandong jam and has developed most of the alternative products from The Quandong. Her knowledge on all aspects of the Santalum is complete. Graham and Iris Herde with NECTARBROOK DISCOVERY PLANTATION have unique skills to act as consultants for anyone or any organisation wanting to establish Santalums as a managed commercial crop anywhere in Australia. |
