Sandalwood and Quandong Propagation

Nectarbrook Discovery Plantation has closed down the Santalum propagation nursery.

Santalum seeds, with all of the information for you to achieve the same good propagation that we got are available in two forms. Enhanced for high germination by weathering and vacuum infiltrated with the plant growth hormone Gibberellic acid ( ProGib G.A.) or plain seed as described below.

Sandalwood seeds are selected from trees producing large nuts, from early producers and vigorous types. Quandong seeds are sourced from clonal Powell's #1 cross pollinated by the reliable and quality seedling "Nonning" cultivar. The "Nectarbrook" seedling  cultivar generated from this breeding will grow into reliable fruiting trees with the potential of producing a Quandong equal to or better than any of the premium commercial types currently available.

The booklet published by Nectarbrook Discovery Plantation covers all areas of Santalum horticultural management including seed propagation.

There are things we have proven to be essential to successful S. spicatum and S acuminatum establishment.

They must have access to sufficient host plants. The best hosts are plants that are surface rooted, nutrient and moisture storing and thrive in the environment in which you wish to establish santalums.

For the first 12 months of plantation growth they must be sheltered from direct sunlight. A 50% shade cloth is ideal.

When planting out the roots must not be disturbed.

They must be regularly watered

Young plants do not have the ability to recover from wilt.

No herbicides, no cultivation.
