This is a three year old Nonning seedling in fruit for the first time. From experiments conducted at Nectarbrook Discovery Plantation we have demonstrated Quandong seedlings reflect the population of trees to which they belong as well as the parent trees. ( Quandongs require a pollinator to set viable seed ).

Isolation of a Quandong tree population for a very long time will tighten the gene pool. Seedlings from the best tree of an isolated population of trees will reflect the parent trees as well as all the trees of the population. If the population of trees all have good fruit all the seedlings will have good fruit.

We searched much of Northern SA to find a population of Quandong trees that we could classify in this way and found them on Nonning Station. The Nonning seedlings can be called reliable.

They are early producers of quality fruit with an excellent flavour and good keeping qualities.

We have 80 of the superior clonal Quandong, Powell's # 1, bred by Brian Powell, growing in Nectarbrook Discovery Plantation. These trees were grafted by Bob and Sue Tulloch and purchased by us from Tulloch-Taverna Partners. The fruit is medium size, dark crimson in colour, non splitting in wet weather and with excellent flavour. It has good keeping qualities.

The Nectarbrook cultivar is the result of the cross pollination of the Powell's #1 with the Nonning cultivar. We believe that seedlings with these inheritability factors have the potential to be good reliable producers as well as the possibility of producing a Quandong tree that is as good as if not better than any of the current named and PBR protected trees.

When purchasing seeds for these plants there are no conditions of sale. Nectarbrook Discovery Plantation, the breeder of the Nectarbrook cultivar, will not take out any breeder's rights to superior trees.
